The Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles

If you own a Ford full-size pickup truck, make sure to lock your doors. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Ford pickup truck has climbed to the top spot on their annual "Hot Wheels" report, which lists the most stolen vehicles in the country. Last year, it was ranked No. 3. The 2006 model year trucks are particularly at risk.

The NICB also analyzed vehicle thefts by state, revealing that the Ford truck was the most stolen vehicle in 19 states: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

This year, the Honda CR-V made its debut on the list, ranking at No. 10 with 10,094 reported thefts. Returning to the list from last year are the Honda Civic (No. 2) and Honda Accord (No. 4).

Fortunately, car thefts have decreased for the second consecutive year. However, there were still nearly 800,000 stolen vehicles reported in 2019, compared to 819,988 in 2018 and 833,740 in 2017.

What to Do if Your Car is Stolen

If your car is stolen, immediately contact the police to file a stolen vehicle report. You'll need to provide them with your car's make, model, year, license plate number, and any other useful descriptive information.

After filing a police report, contact your auto insurance company to submit a claim. Even if you're unsure whether your insurance covers theft, it's still a good idea to notify them. If you need a rental car, your auto insurer can assist you with this as well.

Does Car Insurance Cover Theft?

Having the right auto insurance coverage is crucial. Comprehensive insurance coverage will protect you if your car is stolen. This type of insurance covers damage to your vehicle from non-collision events, such as fire, vandalism, wind and hail, falling objects, and theft.

However, it's important to note that comprehensive insurance does not cover any personal belongings left inside your car if it's stolen.
